About 2.5 km from Velvento is the gorge “of the nine Pierian Muses” or “Skepasmeno”, situated at the foot of the Western Pieria Mountains and along the way of the Lafista (or Laforema) stream - which starts from Katafygi and flows into Polyfytos Lake. The area was named after a point where the stream is covered (“skepazete”) by land. Skepasmeno is a place of special natural beauty, with waterfalls, natural ponds and impressive rocks. Skepasmeno is an integral part of Velvento and the greater area. One may enjoy the view of the first 25m-high triple waterfall from a specially built wooden observation post.
A special recreation park was constructed, so that concerts or festivals may take place. The visitor may follow the waterfall downstream from a path of special difficulty. For the fans of extreme sports, one may climb down and through the waterfall using ropes. Starting from the park, the visitor may walk upstream to the top of the gorge. One his way, he may discover small natural ponds, plane trees, wild vegetation, and the dancing floor made in the 50′s where Velventians were having celebrations. The most daring visitors may go on, following the old path to Katafygi. This route is full of surprises including ten more waterfalls, about twenty small ponds and remains of old watermills.
This is the lower part of the basin “Skouliaritiko pit” on the west side of Pieria. The area is crossed by the main stream of a large water catchment, the eastern boundary of which is the highest mountain ridge of Pieria. The stream has a continuous flow and flows into the artificial Lake of Polyfytos of Aliakmona. In the lower part of the area, an important waterfall is formed of 40meters height with two inter stages. The location of the waterfall is about 4 km far from the town of Velvento and accessing is relatively easy. Slightly higher from the waterfall, a water intake for irrigation takes place with a very small dam and as stone made channel, which drives the water out of the gorge and into the rural area of Velvento. The water supply projects are small, unobtrusive and quite old. From the church of Agia Triada, the waterfall can be approached by the path, which follows the channel through dense bush and flora something that makes it a very scenic route. The terrain slopes are very pronounced. The flora is generally bushy and discontinuous. Along the stream, planes and shrubs on either side slopes are dominated (zone sabljiak). The scrub continuity is interrupted by small rocky outcrops or eroded surfaces of strong gradients in the upper reaches of the region.
The waterfall is the most striking element, properly visible from the existing paths.
