The impressive phenomenon of the geomorphologic shapes of “Bouharia-Nohtaria”, 40km away from Kozani, has been the topic of many myths. In reality, they are natural shapes that were formed by the soil erosion that began 70.000 years ago. “Bouharia” have a column shape and consist of sand, shingles, loam, clay and possibly adhesive substance of iron oxides and silicon dioxide, according to a recent study conducted by the University of Athens. Their top is covered by a shale rock that protected them like an umbrella, during their formation. They are more than twenty and their height ranges from two to six or seven meters.

The name “Bouharia” comes from their shape, since “bouhari” means chimney in the local dialect. “Nohtaria”, in the same area are conical shapes that remind one of pyramids. “Nohtaria” are of the same formation and composition as “Bouharia”, but don’t have the shale hat. They are located along the stream of Potamia, bordering the area of Livadero. The visitors’ first impression is sensational, as their shape is imposing. The area’s residents have given various names to these shapes, such as “Atlantes”, “Karyatides”, “Frouros” etc. Their diameter ranges from half to two meters. Their top is covered by shale that is the cause of their creation. “Nohtaria’, these pyramid shapes, extend to an area of 1,5 km, creating an amazing abstract scenery. According to geologists, the formation of “Bouharia” began 70.000 years ago. Following the path, along the streamlet, one can cross this huge geopark and two hours later reach Voggopetra and the historical church of Agia Paraskevi. Visitors can reach “Bouharia” via an asphalt road (2,5km) that begins from Mikrovalto.
